Exactly, 3 different browsers, multiple tries over a few hour period, same exact result -- spinning icon, dropdown, etc., but can't click. Could it be something related to a blocked port or something? I am a developer and have firebug so can help trace anything you want....

Let me know.

Oh BTW -- earlier I tried from the office and had those issues. Now tested from home (different ISP, etc., same laptop though) and was able to get the file upload selection window in Firefox. Again, maybe it's an issue of a blocked port?

ooohhhh, lordie....

tracey has a sinking awful feeling you are right 100% about that.
we do a (lemme verify...) yah, ARGHH!!!
(we have at the moment a call that goes to one of our servers
on a non-80 port...)

so i'm sure that is 100% it.
i think you have just solved The Smoking Gun
on what has been an issue for others (that i have not been able to track/down or fix).

ok.... so i'm going to have to try to get us to stop using non-80 ports.
which is not going to be easy or quick...

ok, more later, will have to sleep on this and think a bit 8-)

(do you happen to know if your work or otherwise is blocking (GETs) to non-port 80, if they'll block POSTs to non-port 80, too? that's where this gets bad since we have folks POST the file uploads to that port especially...)

THANKS for your *very* helpful reporting and feedback. totally invaluable!
thanks for making the archive a better place (and apologize our glitches 8-)

Yeah I'm sure that the non-80 port is your issue as well. Surely blocked at my office firewall, but not blocked at home. My guess is that the port will be firewalled no matter what operation you try to perform on it.

Very glad to be of service! 14 years of internet development can be put to good use sometimes. :-)

Let me know if there's anything else I can do.

Forum: etree Subject: Re: Can't upload anymore!

hi scott!

ok, so i spent nearly all day yesterday moving the system to use a more-likely-to-be-unblocked port (8080) for *only* the "http editor". today, i will do a quick change to make the "http creator" ( [share] button in upper right corner) use only the std http port (80) for posting.

so we'll have some issues with people on linux (or those electing to not or unable to use the flash-based [share] button for file uploading) **and** port 8080 being blocked (until we can release our new OS and new http server which will be awhile). i can provide an alternate way (i *think*) to have <2GB files upload only on port 80...

so, anyway, more later once i get this sorted out.
but i think we'll have workarounds for the majority of cases.

(people who cannot use the "press [share]" button uploader *and* need to upload >2G files *and* have port 8080 blocked will, for now, be the only case we can't handle (until OS upgrade) but that should hopefully be *quite* rare / the perfect storm).

in the meantime, feel free to see if your work machine browser(s) can access this page: http://ia301318.us.archive.org/index.php
(but switch the port to :8080)

Nope...I think 8080 is blocked for me as well. My company is pretty robust with its firewalling.

ok, very good to know.

my dev is working to make the "create" [share] button use port 80 only.
so that will allow anyone able to use flash w/ non-port80 blocking for up to 2G files to work. (not sure if you are in that boat and can use flash w/i firefox?)

for folks who can't use flash (our [share] button doesn't work reliably for even medium sized files on linux/unix, poop) if they have non-port80 blocking on, i can try to autodetect for that and send them to port-80 only for everything (but then there's the caveat that they can prolly not upload files >2G)

hope to have a solution live by EOD tomorrow if not today!

Yes, I can use flash and am in Firefox. And luckily I do not generally need to upload files >2G in size. I usually upload to the LMA and while my 24/96 files can be big, 2G would be way outside the bounds of what I would normally upload (a 2G 24/96 FLAC file would be longer than 100 minutes, and I can't think of anything I've ever uploaded that would have one track that's longer than 100 minutes!)

Obviously this could become an issue for people who upload video, or long speeches or something like that.

You can, of course, have the uploader app complain if a file is 2G+ and tell them that they need to split it into smaller files (if possible).

ok, working with another engr. here, able to simulate both typical kinds of 8080 port blocking (DENY / stall and REJECT / immed. send "no dice" to client).

my dev box is able to suggest a workaround for both for when the user goes to the "http editor" (only to find their org. is blocking port 8080).

i'm going to do some more testing and QA and then start the steps to get this multipart fix live... hoping by EOD...

Excellent, thanks.

Just in case, hoping you'll continue to keep the FTP upload ability just in case it doesn't work out well for some of us. :-)

oh, and for now, we aren't planning to drop FTP for new item creation
anytime in the forseeable future (we're hoping it gets used less and less over time but no plans to disable 8-) )

You have to fake it out as there's no link for LMA FTP currently. Here's what you need to do. On the FTP page here:
http://www.archive.org/create.php?ftp=1

enter the identifier of your fileset like:
bandname2009-08-29.flac16

Press "create item". Then in your browser, you will come to a new page with a URL like:
http://www.archive.org/create.php?ftp=1&;identifier=abcdef1234

Add the code:
&lma=1

to the end of that URL so it will look like:
http://www.archive.org/create.php?ftp=1&;identifier=abcdef1234&lma=1

and everything will be just like before.

Actually, I am liking the new way of uploading. I was a hardcore FTP person, but the newly-fixed upload (after my complaint) seems to be working like a charm for me

Is there a way to get back to the FTP upload page once a show has been uploaded & you need to change or add files?

The NEW one just spins its lil wheels & doesn't tell me if there's any real progress? & the flash one just times out every time...

ok, the fixes should be live now.
you *should* be able to use the updated [share] button now to create items (with a browser like firefox and flash installed) even with non-port80 blocked.

OK -- just tried and it was a lot better than before -- the "Share" button is clickable, i.e. gets past the spinning circle, it turns into a Flash SHARE button, but when I press the Share button and the file selection popup comes, I can select my files, and click "OK" or whatever, which is good. But then things take a wrong turn -- the uploader's attempts to send my files all immediately report "Security Error".

Let me know if there's anything I can do to help diagnose.

Thanks!

Ha! Thanks. Well I've got nothing to upload at the moment (rare for me as I've uploaded 205 unique concerts [though some have both 16 & 24 bit versions] to the LMA all since last June...)

I'll have something soon enough to test.
